About the course

This 12 month course is divided into three semesters. The first two semesters focus on lectures and lab skills. We have wide choice of lecture modules, so you can focus on the areas of chemistry that interest you most, and you will complete short projects so that you can practice research techniques, data analysis and writing up results. You will also get advanced training in how to find scientific information, plan a project and communicate.

The rest of your degree is centred around your extended research project. Working in one of our state-of-the-art labs with expert researchers, you will manage your own project, and develop important skills such as time management, complex data analysis, and oral and written communication. At the end, you will produce a thesis and give a presentation to the department, before graduating with a great example of lab work for your CV.

After your degree

This course is designed to train you for a wide range of careers in chemistry and related fields, and give you the skills that employers are looking for. You will graduate with the ability to demonstrate your ability to work within a research group, organise your own research, see a project through to completion and communicate your findings.

Our students have an excellent record of students finding great jobs soon after graduation. Our former masters students now work in companies including AstroZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever, and Shell. Others graduates go on to start a PhD, as this course is a great start towards a professional research career.

For this course, we usually ask for a 2:1 BSc honours degree in chemistry or a chemistry-related subject. We can also accept qualifications from other countries. You can find out which qualifications we accept from your country on the University's webpages for international students.

English Language Requirements

If you have not already studied in a country where English is the majority language, it is likely that you will need to have an English language qualification. We usually ask for:

  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS):  Overall grade of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component

CHM6021: Topics in Advanced Chemistry 1 (40 credits)

This lecture module is designed to give you a choice between a wide variety of topics within chemistry. These lecture segments will push your understanding from fundamental to advanced level, bringing you up to date with the latest developments in the field. The following are examples of the topics offered, and you choose four from each semester to be assessed on.

CHM6402: Research and Presentation Skills (15 credits)

This module aims to introduce you to a range of transferable skills important for successful communication in science, research and in other professional areas. You will develop a wider understanding of the context in which research takes place through critical reading and evaluation of a wide range of literature. You will be required to read and assimilate, and will produce a critical report of the literature in a specific research area. In addition, the course will develop your oral and poster presentation skills.

CHM6403: Chemistry Projects (25 credits)

To prepare your practical skill for doing your own research project, you will take part in two mini-projects, undertaken in small groups. To ensure you have a wide skill set, one of these will be in the field of computational chemistry, and the other in synthetic chemistry. The projects also give you the opportunity to improve your scientific writing skills.

CHM6404: Chemistry Research Project (60 credits)

All the skills and knowledge you have developed in the programme will be brought into use when you undertake this extended research project in your preferred area of chemistry under the guidance of a member of academic staff. You will join one of our research groups within the department to produce real cutting edge progress in the field. You will produce a dissertation and an oral presentation based on your findings towards the end of the summer over which the project is undertaken. This book is very similar to the first, but it's a little different. Like Pushing Electrons. Arrow-Pushing deals with resonance structures, chair conformations, and the like and it includes example problems as well. But what is really helpful. are the many solved examples that Dr. Levy provides. These example problems should give you an idea what to expect on your tests and quizzes, and with enough practice, you should see an improvement in your grades!

A molecular modeling kit will help you visualize complex organic structures and better understand complicated techniques.

5. A Molecular Modeling Kit

Yeah I know that this isn't a book or a study guide, but a molecular modeling kit really comes in handy when trying to learn complex organic structures, such as chair conformations. While reading a text, a student can build and manipulate the molecular structures with their hands. For many it is much easier to visualize a complex 3-D structure with models than it is with some 2-D drawings on paper.

  • Steven Hardinger’s site at UCLA is a treasure trove of useful organic chemistry resources including the Illustrated Glossary of Organic Chemistry
  • Lots of good tutorials on this University of Illinois website.
  • “Not Voodoo” is an excellent site for anything to do with organic chemistry lab technique.
  • Chemtips is a blog that has a wealth of useful posts on practical organic chemistry technique. Updated regularly by (soon to be Dr.) Brandon Findlay.
  • CHEM 332 at UIUC has a very thorough and comprehensive website.
  • Khan Academy has a large number of lectures on organic chemistry. They are a decent overview of the course material in Org 1 and Org 2. Videos done by Khan are not the best, but the ones by “Jay” are solid.
  • Freelance Teacher has more organic chemistry videos than you can watch in your lifetime. They are awesome as a step-by-step guide at solving problems. The trouble can be knowing where to look (e.g. a 50+ video series on resonance is comprehensive but not useful). One suggestion might be to use Khan for the big picture and then FT for some guidance on solving specific problems.
